Just another day at Whale Point

FISHERMEN: We have

Steelhead:  Early April to late May
King Salmon: May to late June, but available all summer long.
Silver, Pink and Chum salmon: July to late September.

Hunters:
Prince of Wales island has tons of bears, reportedly 1 per sq. mile. Many 8' black bears are taken yearly.
Bear season opens from January 1 to May 31, then opens again from August 1 to Dec. 31.
Suggested hunting dates, due to hibernation: April 10 to May 31 for spring bear, and baiting is allowed with a permit.  August 10 to Oct. 15 for fall bears. The rivers are full of salmon and fishermen see bears daily, generally. Baiting is allowed, but why would you? Simply fish with a gun.

We are bear unit 2. Contact the Alaska game & Fish for more information on bear hunting and licenses.

Both Killer and Humpback whales are generally seen daily,  May through  September. Often as close as 100 yards or closer.  Or, get a boat and watch them breach feeding all summer long, as close as you like. A photographers dream!
